Dear Students, Esteemed Teachers, and Respected Parents,
One of the fundamental aims of education systems is to develop students
who can use language effectively and consciously, comprehend what they
read, and express their thoughts accurately and coherently. As the General
Directorate of Secondary Education, we consider it a top priority not only to
support academic achievement but also to strengthen our students’ language
skills, foster a robust culture of reading, and make foreign language learning an
integral part of lifelong learning.
A reading culture does not merely enable individuals to access information; it
also enhances their ability to make meaning, interpret, and question. Similarly,
learning a foreign language enables our students to become familiar with Halil İbrahim TOPÇU
diverse cultures, stay informed about global developments, and express Directorate General
themselves within broader contexts. From this perspective, language learning for Secondary Education
goes beyond vocabulary acquisition and grammatical rules; it helps develop
individuals who can communicate effectively and perceive the world from
multiple viewpoints.
Every resource developed in line with this understanding aims to support our
students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in a balanced manner,
enabling them to use language in real-life contexts. Encountering different text
types and experiencing language through content intertwined with culture and
the arts makes the learning process more lasting and meaningful.
An important reflection of the work carried out within this framework is the
opportunities provided by digital structures such as OGM Materyal and the
MEBİ Individual Learning Platform. These platforms contribute to the education
system as complementary tools that support students’ individual learning
needs.
The ‘Young and Wise’ magazine has been prepared as a reflection of this
holistic educational approach. Our magazine stands out for its original content
that supports foreign language learning, texts that strengthen reading culture,
and a structure that aims to develop our students’ thinking, questioning, and
producing skills. Bringing academic content together with culture, the arts, and
everyday life, this publication is a tangible indication of the General Directorate
of Secondary Education’s vision of student-centred and high-quality content
production.
I would like to thank all members of our team who contributed to the
preparation of this publication, and I hope that our magazine will inspire our
students, open new horizons for our teachers, and offer a valuable contribution
to our education community.
Respectfully,
