80. (I) Cultural norms greatly influence gift-giving
practices around the world. (II) Gifts can shape social
dynamics by establishing or reinforcing hierarchies
and connections within a community. (III) In Japan,
for example, wrapping gifts meticulously is a sign of
respect, whereas in Western cultures, the focus is more
on the gift’s thoughtfulness rather than its presentation.
(IV) In some Middle Eastern countries, it is customary
to refuse a gift multiple times before accepting it
to show modesty. (V) Conversely, in many Latin
American cultures, gifts are often accepted and opened
immediately in front of the giver to express gratitude.
