80. (I) Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, also known as the
Choral Symphony, is one of the most significant works
in the Western Classical Music canon. (II) It marks a
dramatic departure from traditional form, as it integrates
vocal soloists and a choir. (III) The symphony comprises
four movements, with the final movement featuring a
choral setting of Friedrich Schiller’s poem Ode to Joy.
(IV) Known especially for this part, it has become an
anthem for unity and brotherhood across cultures.
(V) Beethoven composed many of his masterpieces
during his later years, when he was already profoundly
deaf.
