        80. (I) The rough, lined edges on coins, called ridges, were
first added to stop fake coins and to prevent people
from shaving off bits of valuable metals. (II) Later, this
practice became a serious crime all around the world, and
some countries started making ridged edges standard,
especially on high-value coins. (III) At that time, coins
were usually made from precious metals like silver or
gold, and some people would shave off small amounts
from their edges to save and sell the metal for profit,
which in turn reduced the coins’ actual value. (IV) By
adding ridges, coin makers made it clear if any material
had been taken off, aiming to discourage people from
tampering with coins. (V) Today, even though most coins
are no longer made of precious metals, ridged edges are
still used to help people with vision impairments tell coins
            apart by touch.
