DESCRIBING A PICTURE
1 Work in pairs. Take a photo, but don’t show your photo to your friend. Ask your friend questions using
the information in the boxes below to help your partner describe his/her photo. Try to visualise it.
Then, take turns.
You can use time phrases in describing a picture: You can use different words to describe a picture more interesting:
First / Second / After / Then / Finally Adjectives: young, old, big, early, fantastic, lovely, usual, boring,
While / When / As soon as/ After / Before busy, fast, funny, etc.
During / Later / At that moment Adverbs: quickly, slowly, happily, fast, hard, well, mostly,luckily,
In the beginning / In the end badly, etc.
Suddenly Verbs: come, go, wait, talk, think, decide, look, smile, surprise, etc.
When you don't know what to say, use these hesitation strategies: Well…, Umm.., Err..., Let's see, I mean, I guess, You
know, So, Just a moment, I'm not really sure, , Let me think, You see what I mean, Is that understandable ?, Was I clear
to you?, Where was I?, I have to think about this?, What else ?, Basically…, I don't know., OK?
ACTIONS PEOPLE
Number: How many people/animals are there?
What are the people doing?
Characters: Who is he/she? Who are they? What is it? What are they?
What else is happening?
Age: How old is he/she/it? How old are they?
What was the cause?
Company: Who is with him/her/them?
What is the effect? THEME-5
Appearance: What does he/she look like? What do they look like?
Why was this picture taken?
Feelings: What is he/she feeling? What are they feeling?
SENSES PLACE TIME
What is this? Is it outside or inside?
