a Discuss the following questions with your
                  partner.

1 Look at the photos. Which environmental
                     problems do you see?
2 Read the title of the article. Do you agree
with this idea? Why/ Why not?

b Read the article. Guess the definitions of the
                  highlighted words and phrases.

                     WE ARE DESTROYING THE EARTH!
Human activities are rapidly changing the climate.
According to the report by Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change, human activities over the past 50
years have warmed our planet and these activities
are going to affect all living things and the Earth itself
severely. How could we cause such a big change? How
could warming happen so fast? Let’s take a deep look
               into the reasons:

               1 Greenhouse Effect:
Some gases in the Earth’s atmosphere traps the
Sun’s heat and stops it from leaking back into the
space. However, the amounts of some greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere are increasing gradually, control the natural climate cycle. However, we are
making our planet warmer. Since we burn fossil fuels cutting down trees for industry, or we want to get
like coal and oil, the level of carbon dioxide (CO ) has them out of the way. If we go on destroying trees,
                                                        2
increased in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, CO is the it is estimated that there will be no more rainforests
                                                       2
most responsible gas for warming. As a consequence in 100 years time and according to researches, the
of this, people face serious problems such as extreme widespread loss of forests is going to lead to an
weather conditions, less ice and snow, rising sea level, increase in the amount of CO in the atmosphere.
drought and floods. As we clearly see, we won’t be 2
able to survive unless we stop destroying the Earth. 3 Rapid Human Population Growth:
Increasing human population is one of the significant
               2 Deforestation:
reasons of climate change. Nearly 7.6 billion people
Deforestation means the destruction of forests by live on the planet today. According to the United
people. It’s beyond a shadow of doubt that forests Nations (UN) report in 2017, this number will be 9.8
are vital for life in a lot of ways. They absorb CO billion by 2050. This data foretells a drastic rise in
                                                            2
