Medicine from the Middle Ages to Modern Times
Medieval doctors didn’t use to understand very much about the human body, but today doctors understand a lot
more. Nobody enjoys being ill or going to the doctor. However, receiving medical treatment used to be a much more
dangerous experience. Medieval doctors relied more on superstition than science. Doctors didn’t use to have drugs
for treating diseases. In the Middle Ages, once a doctor had diagnosed the illness, he used to prescribe a suitable
treatment. Doctors used to tell patients to take hot or cold baths. They used to prescribe medicines made from
          animals or plants.
People have always had headaches. Many years ago, medicine men used to make holes in the heads of people
with headaches because they believed this method would let the headache out. Some doctors also put leeches on
the patient’s neck to treat headaches.
Medieval doctors used to think that diseases were punishment for bad behaviours, but modern doctors know
about bacteria and viruses. For example, they believed bubonic plague (or Black Death) was the result of pride.
They used to perform operations without painkillers, and they used to make a lot of mistakes. Modern surgery
is a highly advanced science. Surgeons work in bacteria-free operating theatres and perform complicated operations
using lasers and video screens. But the surgery didn’t use to be so scientific in the past. In fact, doctors didn’t use
to perform operations at all. Barbers performed them without using painkillers. So, the next time you must see a
doctor, remember this, at least you aren’t living in the Middle Ages!
