INTRODUCTION TO IF CLAUSES – CONDITIONALS
The sentences formed for the existence of a necessary condition for an action to occur and the fulfilment of this condition are
defined as “conditional sentences.” They can appear in different types of questions. Do you know that the knowledge of “If Clauses
Types”, “Implied Conditionals”, “Inverted Conditionals”, and “Conditional Conjunctions”, defined as “Other Conditionals”, can be
tested especially in grammar, cloze test, sentence completion and translation questions? Moreover, while solving other types of
questions, namely paragraph comprehension, paragraph completion, irrelevant sentence, and dialogue questions, you may need

Usages of Type 0 (Zero Conditional)
Type 0 (Zero Conditional) yapısını hangi durumlarda kullandığımızı inceleyelim:
1. Genel Gerçekler (General Truth)
Doğruluğunu hiçbir zaman kaybetmeyen genel gerçekler ve eylemler için kullanılır.
▪ If you water your houseplants regularly and give them the necessary vitamins and sunlight, they thrive healthily.
2. Bilimsel Gerçekler Ve Doğa Olayları (Scientific Facts / Natural Events)
Bilimsel gerçekler ve doğa olayları için de bu yapıyı kullanırız.
▪ If the temperature drops below 0°C, water freezes.
3. Alışkanlıklar (Habits)
Alışkanlıklarımızı ifade eden koşul cümlelerinde de Type 0 (Zero Conditional) yapısını kullanırız.
▪ If the curator finds enough and qualified works to fill the capacity in the gallery, he opens an exhibition every six months.

4. Koşullu Emir Cümleleri (Imperatives with ‘if’)
Koşul içeren emir cümlelerinde, Type 0 (Zero Conditional) kullanılır.

Usages of Type 1 (First Conditional)
Gerçek veya olası olduğuna inandığımız gelecekteki durumlardan bahsederken kullandığımız Type 1 (First Conditional)’nın
kullanımını inceleyelim:
1. Type 1’da koşul cümlesi (if clause), gelecek zamanın hiçbir türeviyle çekimlenmez.
▪ If the “Stone Hills Project” involved in the new excavations in Göbeklitepe sustains its permanence, excavations in some areas
may take 100 years.

2. If Clause Type 1 ile birlikte kullanılan “happen to” ve “should,”cümleye “olur da” anlamı katar; bu durumda bahsedilen
koşul, ihtimali düşük bir koşuldur:
▪ If you happen to / should get lost in the forest, you can follow the sun or the pole star to find your way.
