The civil rights movement, which took place mostly during the 1950s and 1960s, aimed to bring equal rights to Black
Americans in the United States. After the Civil War, slavery was officially abolished, yet discrimination against Black
people didn’t come to an end. Especially in the south of the country, Black people had to endure the devastating effects
of this discrimination. Therefore, they, together with many White Americans, took action and started an unprecedented
fight for equality.

I, Too
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.
