FROM HOUSES TO HOMES: CREATING PATHWAYS FROM POVERTY

Guatemala is rich in nature and spirit, but among the poorest in living standards. From Houses to Homes

(founded in 2004) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen communal peace in
highland Guatemala by constructing long-lasting, healthy homes, enhancing access to health care and
education, and encouraging poor and civil society involvement.
The charity is unique in that it makes sustainable changes to

families’ lives rather than providing short-term solutions. FHTH
spends a week tearing down the existing living structure, which is
commonly a cornstalk shack, and building a durable, cinder-block
home for families enrolled in the program. Families can also get

free healthcare and education at the nonprofit's clinic. Around 300
new residences have been built since 2005. A total of sixteen homes
have also been repaired. thirty-five families have received safe and
efficient stoves, as well as beds, mattresses, and bed linen, thanks to

generous donations.
Every child deserves an education, but the nonprofit can only exist
thanks to donations and devoted volunteers. More than 1,000
children have been assisted in attending school; numerous new

schools have been created; school buildings have been restored, and schools have been equipped with
new desks and other equipment. Teachers in one school were given laptops and computer training so
that their children would have
better learning chances in the

future. Some teachers' salaries
are currently subsidized, and
some teachers are totally
funded by the organisation.

In 2009, the organisation paid
for the training of 30 men to
become electricians. Medicine,
clothing, and footwear in

great quantities have been
distributed. All of this was made
possible thanks to the efforts of
over 700 volunteers from 22 different nations. Many people's lives have been changed for the better, and

the volunteers have received invaluable experience.
