Relative Pronouns Modifying Reason
Relative pronouns modifying reason, bir olayın ya da durumun nedenini açıklamak için kullanılan sıfat cümlecikleridir.
Bu bağlamda genellikle why, for which ya da that ilgi zamiri olarak kullanılabilir. Relative pronoun cümleden
çıkartılarak da aynı anlam sağlanabilir.
♦ He decided to quit his job. I don’t know the reason for this.
I don’t know the reason why he decided to quit his job.

Relative clause yapılarında bu kelimeler cümlenin nedenine değil de nesnesine karşılık geliyorsa that ya da which kullanılır.
♦ The reason was a sudden illness. The student gave the reason for the absence from school.
The reason that / which / Ø the student gave for her absence from school was a sudden illness.
Why ve for which kullanımının uygun olup olmadığı, relative clause ile ifade edilen anlamın for this reason veya for
this explanation ifadeleriyle uyumlu olup olmadığına bakılarak anlaşılabilir.
♦ The pandemic was the reason why / that / for which / Ø tourism between countries slowed down considerably.
The pandemic was the reason. (For this reason) Tourism between countries slowed down considerably. ✔
♦ The reason that / which / Ø he explained for the reduction in salaries didn’t convince us.
The reason didn’t convince us. (For this reason) He explained it for the reduction in salaries.
