                                                  Save Our Roofs
According to an architect who has been working on the traditional Ottoman architecture recently,
the hills which are descending from the Blue Mosque in İstanbul were crowded with traditional
Ottoman wooden houses, picturesquely cascading down to the Sea of Marmara fifty years ago.
Today, almost all of them have been replaced by concrete blocks. However, we all know that it’s
essential to save the last of them, at least. The appeal of İstanbul’s wooden hillside houses lies in
the harmony that comes from the consistent use of boarding, bay windows, shallow roofs and deep
overhanging eaves. The wooden houses most of which were built between 1800 and 1840 are left
to go worse. Fortunately, there are some campaigns to save the old wooden houses which still have
the chance to survive. One of those campaigns which is called “Save Our Roofs” was launched
by the Turkish Timber Association with an endorsement from UNESCO in December 2003. The
campaign focusing on repairing wooden houses is an attempt for saving the traditional wooden
houses. This activity will really be a good start to improve and maintain the historic neighborhood.
Today, the authorities of İstanbul have recognized the importance of protecting the city’s traditional
               domestic architecture.
