6. Read the dialog and write what Harry and Sarah wish.
Harry: Your new office looks great, Sarah. I’m sure this cool
and fresh design will encourage your employees to think more
creatively and work more effectively. I wish I worked in an office
like this.
Sarah: So kind of you, Harry. Thanks a bunch. Thinking
well-designed and functional things would fill us with positive
emotions, I spent so much time and money on this new office.
Please have a seat.
Harry: Good heavens! What a light and comfortable chair!
I wish I had one in my office instead of the huge black monster
which makes my back ache. Where did you get this from?
Sarah: Actually, one of my friends recommended me to visit a
very nice and unique shop on Oxford Street. I got it from there.
It’s a special design of an architect, but I don’t know the name.
Harry: We often don’t know the people behind the beautiful and practical things around us. I wish the
designers’ names were put on everything we buy.
Sarah: You’re so right. They are in a way hidden heroes or heroines. We must appreciate their efforts as
they make our everyday lives easier and more comfortable. Also, most of their designs are eye-pleasing.
Harry: Last year, I received a birthday present from my brother, who lives in France. When I opened the
package, it was really hard for me to understand the function of the object. There was a note written by
the designer saying, ‘Design is first and foremost a tool that, at best, tries to help improve people’s lives.’
It was Philippe Starck’s futuristic-looking stylish tripod fruit squeezer.
Sarah: Oh, really. I’ve heard about that famous squeezer. It’s one of the cult objects among design
freaks. How I wish I had one on my countertop in the kitchen. Lucky you! By the way, do you know that
his designs cost an arm and a leg?
Harry: Yes. When I googled him, I saw the prices. To be honest, I really loved his designs. They are all
worth buying. I wish I could afford them one day.
Sarah: I hope so, dear.
